The Scene
The announcement is made to shepherds working a night watch in the fields outside Bethlehem — the least credentialed witnesses on offer anywhere in the region.
The angel gives them three titles in a single sentence: Saviour, Christ, Lord. Then a sign that appears to undercut every one of them — a baby, wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a feed trough. Both halves are true at once, and that is the whole scandal of it.
