The Scene
The prophet is carried out and set down in the middle of a valley full of bones — very many, and very dry. God asks him whether they can live, and Ezekiel gives the only honest answer available: O Lord GOD, thou knowest.
Then he is told to prophesy to them. There is a noise, and a shaking, and bone comes to bone; sinew, flesh, skin, and finally breath. Israel in exile had said their hope was lost and they were cut off. This was the reply.
