The Scene
A priest came down that way and passed by on the other side. A Levite did the same. The third traveller is the one the original audience had been raised to despise — and he is the one who gets down off his animal.
Jesus tells the story to a lawyer who was hoping to have the word neighbour narrowed down for him. The parable widens it instead, until there is nowhere left to stand.
